Gerald Arthur Smith

November 7, 1952 — May 5, 2026

Woodford

Gerald A. Smith, 73, of Woodford, Vermont, passed away on May 5, 2026 surrounded by nature in the farm fields of Vernon, Vermont dressed for the hunt and at peace. Born on November 7, 1952, Gerald, known as Jerry to all, was a man of steady character who found his greatest joys in his family, friends, the rugged beauty of the outdoors, and the country he served.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Jerry carried the values of service and dedication throughout his life. Following his military service, he established himself as a highly respected master finish carpenter. Known for his sharp eye and meticulous attention to detail, Jerry’s craftsmanship can be found in homes throughout the region. He took great pride in his work, believing that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing perfectly—a philosophy that earned him the deep respect of his peers and neighbors.

Jerry was also a longtime member of the Bennington Elks Lodge #567, where he enjoyed the company of friends and the camaraderie of the community.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Jerry was truly at home in nature. Whether he was tracking through the woods of the greater Vermont and Ohio region, casting a line into local streams, or heading out for the thrill of deep-sea fishing. He lived for the crisp mornings of the season and the quiet patience of a day spent on the water.

A presence at baseball games, a voice that echoed across a gymnasium at a wrestling match. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan—and the fan of every teammate they played with.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Olin and Phillis Smith; his brothers, Joe and Scott Smith; and his sister, Pamela Monroe.

He is survived by his daughter, Tara Smith Caron, and her husband Tyler of North Petersburgh, NY; his son, Jerad Smith of Bennington, VT; and his honorary son, Zach James of Woodford, VT. He was the proud grandfather of Isabella and Dustin Caron; Brody, Easton, Wrensly Smith and Ronan Mulligan. He is also survived by his brother, William Smith, and his sister, Marilyn Gardner; as well as many nieces and nephews, along with a wide circle of friends who will miss his stories, his craftsmanship, and his steady presence.

A time for visitation will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2026 from 10:00-11:00 AM at EP Mahar & Son Funeral Home located at 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201. A funeral service with military honors will follow the visitation.

Friends are invited to a reception at the Bennington Elks Lodge #567, 122 Washington Ave, Bennington, VT following Gerald Smith’s services.
