Gary McIntire Sr., 71, longtime resident of Bennington, VT passed away on March 7, 2026.
Gary was born on August 27, 1954 to the late Herbert & Marjorie (Woodard) McIntire in Waterbury, CT. He was one of three children. Gary received his early education at Mount Anthony Union High School, and shortly after graduating joined the United States Army in 1972. He served during the Vietnam war, and was incredibly proud to serve his country. He retired after 22 years of service as a First Sergeant for C/172nd Armor Division.
Gary would marry the former Dawn Bornt, and together they raised their three children. He and Dawn would spend 46 years together before her passing in 2018.
Gary’s work in the excavation business coincided with his time in the military. He worked for Dailey’s and Willy Morse, and also had his own business in the Bennington area. Eventually he and Dawn would move to Florida where they resided for 21 years. Gary was an employee for the Highway Department during this time. Later, he and Dawn moved to Georgia where he was the Highway Superintendent for 5 years. After Dawn’s passing, Gary moved back to Vermont to be closer to his children and remaining family.
Some of Gary’s favorite pastimes included hunting and fishing; he enjoyed being in the outdoors. He also loved dirt track racing.
Gary is survived by his three children: Gary McIntire Jr. (Jamie), Heath McIntire (Chelsea), and Mark McIntire (Cherrie). His four grandchildren: Kinzer, Quintin, Jordan, and Maddox.
Gary is predeceased by his wife, Dawn (Bornt) McIntire. His parents, Herbert & Marjorie (Woodard) McIntire. His two sisters, Barbara Clairmont and Joyce Miner.
Graveside services with military honors for Gary McIntire Sr. will be held on May 19, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington, VT.
